Henkel and LyondellBasell have joined forces to develop a hotmelt adhesive for re-sealing APET and polyolefin trays containing food products.

Based on LyondellBasell’s plastomer material, the adhesive is designed to open smoothly at the initial unseal, and to reseal numerous times to preserve the food’s flavour, as well as preventing microbial growth and the loss or gain of unwanted moisture.

Dirk Kasper, head of Product Development Packaging Adhesives Europe at Henkel, says: “It’s the first time we are using this type of solution for re-closable packaging. Thanks to its product design, our re-closable hotmelt provides processing advantages compared with current market alternatives.

“This is about its very good compatibility with coextruded materials such as polyethylene (PE) or polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) and stable film-blowing. Additionally, it shows long-lasting re-closability properties.”

“Besides the processing advantages, plastomers bring additional benefits to the end user,” adds Stefano Pasquali, technical service manager at LyondellBasell. “One characteristic that distinguishes our plastomer solution from traditionally used solutions is its low odor. This is especially important for food packaging.

“It is also one of the main ingredients, which allows it to make the packaging very easy to open and reclose, over and over again. We are proud that our solution contributes to an improved consumer experience while reducing food waste.”

Henkel’s Technomelt Supra ECO – a ‘carbon negative’ hotmelt adhesive with a reported potential to exceed over 80% bio-based raw material input without impacting performance – was the winner under the Climate category at the Sustainability Awards 2022.

Meanwhile, Meler has unveiled its new hand-held hot melt applicator to ensure that applicators stay safe yet remain precise during the gluing process.

Baumer hhs previously launched its own modular gluing system for corrugated converters that uses sensors to identify adhesives without the need for additives.

Meler, YourGluingSolutionsPartner, has introduced Raptor Handy, a new hand-held hot melt applicator from its specialist brand Raptor that aims to optimise and facilitate glueing processes.

With only hours to go until the Sustainability Awards 2022, we speak to Henkel about its ‘carbon-negative’ hot melt packaging adhesive, which has been nominated for our award under the Climate category.

Baumer hhs has announced its CorrBox Solution, a modular glueing system for corrugated convertors featuring a sensor that can detect adhesives without the need for additives, and a multi-application head for various viscosities and a smoother start-up process.

TekniPlex Healthcare is claiming to have developed the world’s first fully transparent recyclable mid-barrier blister package.

Sidel has opened a new, small-scale PET recycling pilot line in Octeville, France, hoping to gain an understanding of and guide the packaging industry through the use of recycled PET.

A new report by Minderoo Foundation in collaboration with Clyde & Co and Praedicat warns that the reported impacts of plastic pollution on human health could incur steep costs in liability claims against the petrochemical industry – over $20 billion between 2022 and 2030 in the US alone.
